When Atmosphere first releasedYou Can’t Imagine How Much Fun We’re Havingin October 2005, it exceeded what many fans had come to expect: more raw, more urgent, more emotionally expansive than earlier releases. At the time, the country was reeling from ongoing wars overseas, increasing economic uncertainty at home, and a growing epidemic of prescription drug abuse, while Slug and Ant were reaching a turning point after years of nonstop touring and underground acclaim. Critics praised the album for its potent dualities: driving, high-energy production built for impact; tracks Ant suffused with anxiety and apprehension, like “Panic Attack” and “Say Hey There,” that evoke tension without feeling inaccessible; and moments of introspection and soulful warmth, particularly in “Little Man,” that showed Slug pushing himself into deeper, more mature territory. The response was emphatically positive—You Can’t Imagine How Much Fun We’re Havingnot only solidified Atmosphere’s status in indie hip-hop, but became one of their defining works, consistently lauded by both critics and fans alike.
In celebration of the album’s 20th anniversary, we’ve developed this limited edition re-issue with custom-built packaging inspired by all the chain smoking Slug and Ant were doing when they first wrote and recorded it. They’ve long since given up the habit, and we hope you can too, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have a little fun with the concept, right?
