Abstract Rude & Kenny Segal - Through The Darkness (Digital)

"Through The Darkness," written by Abstract Rude, is on the surface a rally cry for the public to stay informed and vote during midterms, local, and General Elections. It reminds 'We The People' to use our collective voices for the greater good of our communities - even when silenced by divisive, underserved, and unkind politics. It also emphasizes that even a tyrannical term will end if we use our collective voices to vote out officials supporting bad policy. The verses reference various Black Historical Artists and figures (like Chuck Berry & Dolemite), weaving through past time periods (like the late 1860s Pullman Porters) meant to highlight the importance of voting today as a way to honor and respect the struggles of our African American ancestors who fought for and won the right to vote.

The deeper meaning of the song encourages us all to persevere through the ups and downs of life and the polarizing swings of society's POV of you as whatever race, gender, religious or philosophical group. The Darkness represents dismissive white noise, racism, non-inclusion, disproportionate incarceration and lack of economic opportunity. Yet, for us, the only way out is Through. To make it through all of life's darkest times and hardest tests, and to remain standing, vigilant in the pursuit of success and your family's happiness - that is your light still shining.

Ultimately, "Through The Darkness" is Abstract Rude's subtle nudge to listeners: never let anyone dim your shine, and to never believe it's over just because we're going through a dark period.

Please get out and vote this November 3rd!!!
